Vaterland vs Mutterland

독일어에는 das Vaterland라는 단어도 있고 das Mutterland라는 단어도 있다.

물론 영어에도 fatherland, motherland가 있고 우리나라에도 조국, 모국이 있지만

독일어에서 두 단어의 의미는 새롭다.

 

우선, das Vaterland는 누군가가 나고 자란 조국, 고국이라는 뜻이며, 아이러니하게도 모(母)국이라고 할 수도 있다.

die Heimat, das Heimatland와 동의어이다.

 

das Mutterland 역시 조국, 모국의 뜻으로 쓸 수 있지만

다만 다른 뜻이 하나 더 있는데, 고것은 바로 '식민 제국'이라는 뜻이다.

 

독독 사전에서 s. Mutterland의 정의는 다음과 같다.

-Land, von dem Kolonien abhängig sind (Wictionary)
